Rehabilitation of Degraded Agricultural Lands in Kandy, Badulla, and Nuwara Eliya Districts of the Central Highlands (GCP / SRL/ 063/ GEF)
The GCP/SRL/063/GEF project is built on the existing institutional and regulatory frameworks, as well as on a series of field programs and activities currently underway. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in partnership with the Government of Sri Lanka is rehabilitating degraded agricultural land in the Central Highlands where 50 percent of agricultural lands are in a degraded condition. With funding of USD 11 million from the Global Environment Facility (GEF), the project covering an area of approximately 579,384 ha is being implemented in the Kandy, Badulla and Nuwara Eliya districts which have the highest levels of land degradation. The integrated efforts the Ministry of Mahaweli Development and Environment, Ministry of Agriculture, the Department of Agriculture, the Natural Resources Management Centre and FAO is focused on:
- Strengthening institutional, policy and regulatory frameworks for Sustainable Land Management (SLM)
- Implementing identified SLM land restoration technologies
- Developing and implementing innovative funding systems to promote SLM
- Encouraging knowledge management, awareness raising, and dissemination of best practices
